A vascular surgeon does far more than surgery.

A vascular surgeon makes sure patients with vascular health issues know and understand all their options. In short, vascular surgeons can do surgery, but they see and treat many patients who don't require surgery.

Why are vascular surgeons important? ›

They provide treatments that help prevent stroke and aneurysm rupture and help relieve symptoms from blocked arteries. Vascular surgeons are highly skilled at solving serious medical problems and working with complex anatomy.

How many vascular surgeons are there in the USA? ›

Across the United States, 3129 vascular surgeons were practicing in 533 counties (16.9%), with 213.8 million peo- ple (69.0%) living in those counties.

Do vascular surgeons deal with the heart? ›

No. A cardiologist specializes in treating your heart. A vascular doctor treats your blood vessels throughout your body, including your aorta, a very large artery that sends oxygen-rich blood to your body. However, a vascular doctor doesn't treat the heart itself.

How serious is vascular surgery? ›

Like all surgeries, vascular surgery poses some risks of complications, which increase if the patient smokes, is obese, and has other serious conditions like chronic lung disease. There is additional risk when the surgeon operates on the chest or a major blood vessel.

What is the most common vascular surgery? ›

Some of the most common procedures they perform are carotid artery surgery, lower limb revascularization, endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms, and treatment of varicose veins. Limb amputation is a procedure that vascular surgeons may use as a final resort. This involves surgically removing a limb or part of a limb.

Is vascular surgery a competitive specialty? ›

The overall competitiveness level of vascular surgery is high.

Why would you be sent to a vascular surgeon? ›

Patients with existing health issues that affect their blood vessels may be encouraged to see a vascular surgeon. These include people who suffer from high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. They can recommend treatment for diabetes-induced ulcers and spider and varicose veins too.

What is the survival rate for vascular surgery? ›

The incidence of 1-year complications varied depending on the type of vascular surgery (Table 2). In the entire cohort, the most frequent 1-year complications were MI (224/2534; 8.8%), amputation (187/2534; 7.4%), and congestive heart failure (67/2534; 2.6%). The mortality rate at 1-year was 8.8% (223/2534).

What is the recovery time for a vascular surgeon? ›

Bruising is common for the first few days before gradually improving. Walking is encouraged right away with slow increase. Avoidance of sitting or standing for long periods is necessary and when laying, the legs should be elevated. Full healing takes about 8 weeks.

What does a vascular surgeon treat? ›

Vascular surgeons use treatments that range from noninvasive procedures to complicated surgeries. They treat arteries and veins in all parts of the body except for the heart and brain, which are handled by other specialists.

Does general surgery include vascular surgery? ›

In some circ*mstances, the certified general surgeon provides care in the disease areas of vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, thoracic surgery, burns, and solid organ transplantation. However, comprehensive knowledge and management of conditions in these areas generally requires additional training.
