A Lighthearted Take On The Messiness Of Divorce

Her latest drop amps up the energy and draws listeners to a honky tonk dance floor with the sounds ofJedd Hughes and Ethan Ballinger’srhythmic electric guitar riffs,Bukka Allen’s barrelhouse piano, Rachel Loy on bass and Conrad Choucroun’s on drums. Thebuoyant energy matches Lambert’s self-determination that she was raised on a true Texan as she offers humor amid thetale of a woman looking to get what she deserves from the man who scorned her.

“I called that lawyer up in Dallas, the one who’s livin’ in that palace / So I know he’s good at winnin’, if you think there’s somethin’ that you’re missin’,” Lambert sings on the pre-chorus before making her intentions crystal clear on the next set of lyrics, “You Start Steppin’ Out/ Only One Thing Can Console Me/ If You’re Gonna Leave Me In San Antone/ Remember The Alimony.”

How The Song Came To Be

Lambert recalled the moment she and her co-writers Natalie Hemby and Shane McAnally were struck with the inspiration to write “Alimony,” explaining they were out in her barn and admiring her horses when she asked if McAnally had any titles in his back pocket that they build a song out of.

“He said he had one, and I was like, ‘What is it? Because your last one was ‘Looking Back on Luckenbach,’ which I didn’t think you could top. He said, ‘Well, ‘If you’re gonna leave me in San Antone, remember the Alamo-neeeee…’’ Natalie and I were like, ‘Alright, Shane! Stop showing off.’

“We went back to the house and got the guitars,” Lambert continues, “and I specifically was like, ‘I want a shuffle, man.’ I love to shuffle so much, and this record needed a shuffle! I knew I wanted one in my set, because I haven’t done one in a while – andeverybodyloves a shuffle.”

Miranda Lambert Draws Inspiration From Her Childhood

The “Actin’ Up” singer had no problem coming up with the words to fit this title as she was well-equipped on all the goings on of messy divorces. She laughed as she explained that growing up, her parents’ were private investigators in Dallas, Texas who frequently were tasked with dealing with divorce cases within the areas known for being a bit more pretentious.

“So this wasn’t hard to write. I’d heard about it my whole life,” she shared before adding, ““And once we had the line –If you’re gonna leave me in San Antone, remember the alimony– we were off! We used every Texas metaphor we could come up with on purpose; we wanted to take something kind of sh*tty and put some humor back in it. I mean, the guy gets out pretty easy if all he does is move back in with his mom.”

The writers then assembled a “musical dream team” with GRAMMY-winning songwriter/producer Jon Randall to finish off the track in Austin’s legendary Arlyn Recording Studios. They set out to build a song that would add a bit of extra upbeat flare to Miranda Lambert’s new project, and they ended up with just that and more.
